Varnett's Exploration Academy focuses on science, space

The Exploration Academy serves underrepresented fifth-grade students in the greater Houston area. Students participating in the program at Space Center Houston engage in hands-on activities related to space, aerospace and science and visit the Astronaut Training Facility and Rocket Park at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

Through project-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning experiences, Exploration Academy seeks to develop those students who show great potential in the field of science but would benefit from additional instruction in order to meet that potential.

Students engage in hands-on, experience-based, and project-based learning to improve their skills in scientific inquiry while they explore practical applications of science. Activities are aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

On a recent visit, students learned about black holes in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out.

"We are always excited to see the Varnett students arrive and look forward to several more weeks of authentic hands-on learning," said Ms. Phyllis Friello, education manager at Space Center Houston.
