Mr. and Ms. Cinco de Mayo costume contest

Students at The Varnett School East launched their celebration of Cinco de Mayo with a colorful fashion show on Friday, April 27, 2018.

They all competed to be named Mr. and Ms. Cinco de Mayo in their various grade groups, and it was a tough call for the judges. The students were judged in the categories of pre-k and kindergarten, first and second grades, third and fourth grades, and fifth and sixth grades.

The winners were (see top photo, from left to right):

  • Jocelyn Cruz and Iziam Maradiaga, fifth graders
  • Jennifer Mejia and Leonel Hunter, third graders
  • Kimberly Santos and Justin Piedras, first-graders
  • Katherine Arroyo, pre-k, and Omar Zepeda, kindergarten

These students will receive individual trophies at an East Campus Cinco de Mayo celebration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018.

The judges awarded points for best overall, most creative and addressing the Cinco de Mayo theme. The judges were Ms. Sandra Smith, Varnett’s chief financial officer, Ms. Cheyne Brown, director of Early Childhood and Mr. Peter McConnell, Varnett’s communications director.

“You all look fabulous and everybody is a winner,” Ms. Gayle Voltz, director of The Varnett School East, told the students. “Thank you for your participation.”

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
