Campus renovation, teacher expectations highlight East open house

Parents came away impressed with the new renovation at East Campus Thursday during a 90-minute open house.

The campus has larger classrooms and extended walls to reduce the noise between classrooms. The Varnett Public School also installed five new classrooms to the site at 804A Maxey Road.

“This looks more like a school as opposed to a storefront school,” Campus Director Gayle Voltz said.

Ms. Voltz said 152 parents showed up to visit classrooms, played educational games and had some food in the cafeteria. Teachers demonstrated use of the Promethean interactive white board which enables students to work together simultaneously  using multi-touch features.

Teachers also  emphasized the importance of perfect student attendance, homework and good behavior, Ms. Voltz said. Each grade level had a Spanish interpreter.

The color schemes of red, blue, green and yellow “help reintroduce the basic colors that children learn when they first start school,” Ms. Voltz said.

The campus will host a fall carnival on Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m. to  2 p.m. Check the campus website at varnett.org, for updates on school activities and other events.
