The participants donned black shirts that read “Varnett East Campus STAAR Wars – May the Scores Be With You” as they paraded around the playground, danced, cheered and listened to music provided by The Box.
Students from PreK through 5th grade participated even though it was only grades three through five that were and are slated to take the STAAR exam.

The program included students rushing through a banner, a simulated flute presentation by kindergartners, and second graders performing a dance for third graders.
“Eat a good breakfast, take your time and use your strategies,” said KBXX representative Amir Diamond. He was joined by Riri and Grundy Shane Wiley, both of the station.
And to remind people what the rally was all about, Mr. Bruce Rhone, the math and science instructional coach at East, conducted a science experiment by mixing 20 peroxide, dish-washing detergent and yeast to produce a chemical reaction (See video!).
"You will see this on your STAAR test," Mr. Rhone said. "That's why we are doing this today."
Dr. Margaret Stroud, Varnett's superintendent, was on hand to encourage the students for the STAAR test challenges that face them.
Ms. Gayle Voltz, the campus director, said 101 students in grades three through five were given a wrist band, pencil and bookmark.
With all the student dancing going on, a competition of sorts was inevitable. To the four winners were a pair of tickets to see Silento at the House of Blues on Sunday, April, 3.
A special thanks for Ms. Amy Jones, a campus interventionist, who organized the event. And thanks to our friends at 97.9 The Box!
