First-grade teacher Ms. Pastor named Teacher of the Month at East

I would like to thank God for all His blessings, my family, team and co-workers for being my extended family.

As a little girl in Honduras, I always played teacher. My dream was to teach. I came to the United States at the age of 12. Not speaking the language made me retreat. I was very shy and would not speak in school, to the point that my teachers had to speak to my father about being left back one year.

I graduated from The South Bronx High School in 1992. Because I still didn’t speak the language I decided to go to a college that would force me to speak English - SUNY Canton at Canton, N.Y.  Then I transferred to Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., where I received my bachelor's degree in Behavior Science, with a minor in Education.

After moving to Houston in 2001, I worked at Aldine ISD for a year as a substitute teacher, then as a 1st grade bilingual teacher for 4 ½ years. I started working at The Varnett Public School- East Campus in February 2008. It’s been wonderful being here at East Campus.

Teaching is my life. I believe that every child or person can learn. We all have different learning styles. I feel that as a teacher I have to find out my students' learning style so they can be successful. A teacher just needs time, patience, and dedication. My belief is that a teacher is a tool that can make a difference or change in a person's life. You as a teacher make the choice to make the change positive or negative.

To the students and teachers: always be the best you could be and do not limit yourself because the sky is the limit for everything.

Ms. Pastor

Special thanks to Mr. Rhone
