East Campus celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Students and staff dressed in pink t-shirts held a ceremony before 60 balloons were released into the air as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event occurred Monday at the East Campus playground.

The participants walked around the playground twice by grade level, starting with 5th graders and continuing down to the Pre-k class.

Instructors talked about breast cancer awareness and steps people can take to prevent or deter the disease. They sang the song “Just Stand Up,” performed by an all-star charity supergroup of pop, R&B, rock and country artists during a live version of the telethon "Stand Up to Cancer."

Lyonell Hunter, a first grader in Ms. Pastor-Castillo’s class, become emotional when he  talked about his grandmother succumbing  to breast cancer. Fifth graders and all of the staff then released the balloons. Ms. Voltz, the East Campus director, tried to console Lynel by telling him that one of the balloons would reach his grandmother in heaven.
