More than 60 grandparents came to East Campus this week to share breakfast with their loved ones, and there were signs of love throughout.
Sunday, Sept. 13, is National Grandparents Day, which occurs on the first Sunday after Labor Day. President Jimmy Carter signed observance into law in 1978.
East Campus presented a theme from the 1950s, a time when lots of today’s grandparents were born. Grandparents and their grandchildren posed for pictures in front of a replica of an ice cream soda stand with a backdrop that read, “Grandparents Rock.”
On Grandparents Day, will you call, text or write?
The families were served Kolaches, strawberry and grapes, muffins, juice and water.
Ms. Martinez, the East Campus parent liaison, organized the event and said afterward: “It was wonderful and the grandparents enjoyed it. It was nice to see the grandparents spend time with their grandchildren.”
The gathering was one of many special events planned for Varnett families on campuses throughout the school year. (See the calendars on the main page and campus pages.)
“Ms. Martinez did a fantastic job in planning the event,” said Ms. Voltz, East Campus director.
About 4 million greeting cards are sent within the United States each year on National Grandparents Day, according to timeanddate.com
“This day is also an opportunity for people to appreciate and express their love to their grandparents through kind actions such as making a phone call or inviting their grandparents for dinner. People living in retirement villages or nursing homes may receive a visit from their grandchildren or loved ones on this day.”
