More than 150 parents showed up to the campus during the second week of school, and many were armed with questions about the curriculum.
Ms. Voltz, the campus director, said students must come to school on time, encouraged perfect attendance and explained the school uniform policy.
“The parents had a lot of questions about technology and the educational programs at East Campus,” Ms. Voltz said.
The open house produced some immediate results. Thirty six parents signed up to join the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) and 50 students applied for library cards from Harris County. The library cards are just another way to encourage students to read as part of a reading initiative launched by Dr. Stroud, Varnett’s interim superintendent.
One parent brought about 75 pens for students.
After visiting the classrooms, parents and students enjoyed refreshments in the cafeteria and played games in the multi-purpose room. Varnett staff also handed out bookmarks.
“All in all, it was a good start in our effort to improve parental involvement,” Ms. Voltz said.
