East Campus celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a high note Tuesday. The campus director, Ms. Voltz, welcomed the parents, students and staff with a bienvenidos. The host, Kevin Villatoro, and the hostess, Brianna Thomas, did an outstanding job. They started the show off with the history of the Mexican victory over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, which is why we celebrate Cinco De Mayo.
Pre-K students danced the La Raspa and the kinder students performed the Michoacán, which is the dance of the elderly men. The first and second graders did an awesome job dancing to the catchy tune, La Cucaracha. Third graders wowed the audience with their performance of El Jarabe Tapatio. The next two groups did just as well with their dance performances. The fourth graders dazzled the audience with their dance steps to Mariachi Loco and fifth graders showed their experience as dancers to El Son de La Negra.
The Mariachi Real Mexicanisimo performed traditional songs for our audience. They were fantastic and parents and students really enjoyed the music. The DJ Lumbre brought a current vibe of Tejano music to our celebration. We all had a great time-sharing in a cultural event that helps us all become aware of each other’s values and contributions to world history.
Meanwhile, the Tooth Fairy came to visit us during our Cinco de Mayo celebration. The Wallisville Dental group brought the Tooth Fairy to talk to our parents and students about dental hygiene. The dental group and Texas Children's Hospital set up displays in our library.
East Campus would like to thank our superintendent, Dr. Stroud, as well as parents and community partners who helped share in our special celebration today.
