Varnett promotes family bonding in recognition of Grandparents Day

On September 5, Varnett’s East Campus was in the family bonding business.

Two days before Grandparents Day, students shared breakfast with members of the older generation and then handed out self-made greeting cards expressing love for their elders.

The event played out at the Northeast and Southwest campuses as well, in honor of grandparents who contribute so much to families and have so many stories to tell.

East Campus director Gayle Voltz reported that 76 grandparents came to the campus and spent some time meeting teachers after they were served a healthy breakfast of Kolache, cereal, fresh fruit and milk.

“I was touched that so many grandparents participated at a function designed to encourage bonding between the older generation and the younger generation,” Ms. Voltz said. “It’s a bond that will never be broken.”

Grandparents Day fell on September 7 this year. The special designation, signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Many families in the United States observe Grandparents Day on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

“We anticipate more activities involving parent participation,” Ms. Voltz said.
