Brother and sister named Mr. and Miss Cinco de Mayo

What are the odds?

A brother-sister team earned the titles of  Mr, and Miss Cinco de Mayo after their Latino-style fashion dazzled the judges at East Campus.

Jeremy Vela is a second-grader and Mailyn Vela is in PreK-4. (see photo at right). All the contestants walked to the stage to show off their attire in the first contest of its kind at East, Northeast, Southwest and Southwest PreK.

Jeremy and Mailyn earned a chance to be named the district's Mr. and Miss Cinco de Mayo at a district-wide observance of Cinco de Mayo at the Southwest Campus on May 5.

Edward Chavez, a second-grader, and Jeyda Reyes in PreK-4 finished second in the judging and Frank Navarro, first grade, and Dayra Gembe came in third.

Varnett Superintendent M. Annette Cluff initiated the contest as a way for students to have a little fashion fun before the May 5 district-wide celebration. "But everybody is a winner," Dr. Cluff said.

Thanks to all the students who took part in the fashion show and the parents who helped their children work on their outfits.
