Varnett's Christmas message? Kids helping kids

Students stepped up and filled five boxes with new toys for the needy before Christmas.

While all East Campus students were asked to participate in the toy drive, it was the kindergarten students who took the initiative and established the idea for the community service project, which ran Dec 1-13.

“We wanted the students to realize that it’s more important to give than receive,” said Ms. Angela Verdin, a kindergarten teacher. “Some children weren’t fortunate enough to receive gifts from Santa Claus so we gave our students an opportunity to help someone else.”

The 149 toys included baby dolls, trucks, airplanes, kitchen sets and doctors’ kits. A representative of the Houston Fire Department’s Station 44, across the street from East Campus, picked up the toys.

An HFD representative said the toys were to be collected by the city of Houston to be distributed to needy children.
