Students cash in on week-long book fair

Librarians and teachers love to put books into the hands of children.

Students at East Campus bought approximately 100 books during the Scholastic Book Fair Oct. 14-18, generating more than $2,500 in sales. A significant portion from the sales goes toward books and other materials for the campus library. Also on sale were pencils, posters, erasers and other supplies, said Ms. Rena Rosser, the school’s librarian.

“Even if the kids had only $1, they were able to buy something,” Ms. Rosser said.

Scholastic Book Fairs, in conjunction with school districts throughout the country, helps generate more than $175 million in fundraising for school projects and classroom materials, according to its website. The affordable books reach more than 35 million students each year.

The more popular books at East Campus were “Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses” and "Barbie: The Princess & The Popstar" The parents joined the fun by helping their children pick books before, during and after school hours.

“Every class from PreK-3 through 5th grade came through the library,” Ms. Rosser said. “It’s very important to put books into kids’ hands at a reasonable price. These are very important reading tools for the parents and the kids.”

Ms. Rosser had fun reading to PreK students and watched as one excited student bought his book and immediately started reading it in the library.

With the proceeds or credits from the sale, Ms. Rosser and Campus Director Gayle Voltz will look through the Scholastic Book Fairs catalogue and decide what books and other materials they will add to the library. “We’ll decide what our needs are and go from there,” Ms. Rosser said.
