The internet may be the dominant source of information, but East Campus students proved that books are still a priceless commodity.
Students and parents exceeded the campus goal by raising about $2,300 during the Scholastic Book Fair Oct. 15-19. The money raised from the sales is reinvested in materials for the library, such as books, audio and video equipment.
Each year Scholastic Book Fairs, in partnership with schools across the country, hosts more than 120,000 book sale events that give more than 35 million students access to thousands of affordable and educational products. Pencils, erasers, posters, bookmarks and other school related items are included in the package.
Campus librarian Rena Rosser said the school exceeded its goal of raising $2,000. “We extended our hours for parents to come in and we got a good response,” she said.
The fairs have turned into effective fund-raisers to supplement student learning and the books were very popular this year. “I was really proud of our students this year because they bought more books than pencils compared to the previous year,” Ms. Rosser said. “We encouraged the students to buy books they could read and the parents were really responsive to that. Our goal is to put more books into the kids’ hands and in the library.”
Ms. Rosser praised campus director Gayle Voltz for enthusiastically supporting the project.
