More than 200 students received fire safety and prevention tips from the Houston Fire Department.
Special guest was a fire truck, which came from Station 44. Those who participated included 215 students from Kindergarten,1st, 2nd and 5th grades.
Among other things, the firefighters told children how to stay safe in case of an emergency. Students later took turns getting inside the fire truck and checking out all the gear.
The fire department visit came during National Fire Prevention Week, October 7 - 13, 2012 when attention is focused on promoting fire safety and prevention. However, everybody should practice fire safety all year long. Many potential fire hazards go undetected because people simply do not take steps to fireproof their home.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
