Grandparents feast, visit classrooms and receive gifts

East campus had the greatest turnout this school year in celebration of Grandparents Day.

We had 76 students and more 200 grandparents join us today. The families feasted on a continental breakfast, visited the classrooms and received grandparent-themed gifts made by the students. The students also took pictures with their grandparents and will receive those pictures on Monday.

This year, National Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 9. The impetus to designate a special day for grandparents originated with Marian McQuade, a West Virgina housewife. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly people in nursing homes. According to grandparents-day.com,  Ms. McQuade also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Ms. McQuade was born in 1917 and died in 2008.

The grandparents thanked the Varnett staff for thinking about their special day! One parent noted this was a nice and well-organized event.
