East Campus 4th graders receive “Compassion Award 2012” plaque for contributions to men’s shelter

Asset Building Network Inc. invited Varnett’s East Campus 4th graders to a luncheon where the school was awarded a “Compassion Award 2012” plaque for their kindness and donation of 100 pairs of white socks. During a May 5 event at the Coronita Buffet, teacher Shanti Bhatt presented the basket full of socks to some of the residents of the House of Hope’s men’s shelter. Mrs. Bhatt was accompanied by East Campus Director Gayle Voltz.

"Students schoolwide bought brand new socks to be donated by the 4th graders," Ms. Gayle said.
Every year Mrs. Bhatt’s fourth grade class collects men’s white socks for its community service project.

Last year students donated more than 100 pairs of socks to Asset Building Network Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Mrs. Glory Udoh. Her organization has been in existence for the past 13 years and established House of Hope in 2011. The facility helps homeless men re-enter society with the necessary tools to enable them to become successful working individuals. Fourth graders help contribute to this success by donating the much needed socks.

The guest speaker was Chris Hudson, who works with poverty-stricken individuals and is president and CEO of Morris Architects. The theme for the event was “Hope means Help.”

“Faith is the evidence of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.” Mr. Hudson said. It was rewarding to hear how well the residents of House of Hope are coping with everyday life issues.
