East Campus students, parents and staff were part of a total of more than 2.1 million people who attended Houston Livestock and Rodeo that concluded its three-week run Sunday, March 18, at Houston's Reliant Park.
East Campus Pre-K through 1st graders took part in the activities March 1, and 2nd through 5th grade students took their turn on March 8.
Donning tangerine-colored t-shirts, students enjoyed the rides, watching the animals and other events. The campus turned out 225 students and 181 chaperones on March 1 and 126 students and 80 chaperones on March 8 for a grand total of 612 people.
The rodeo featured five new rides and a singing competition and next year officials will focus on improving its technology such as lighting, lasers and other presentation features.
"They added extra activities for the children and they milked a simulated cow," East Campus director Gayle Voltz said. "They were also excited about seeing the chicken eggs hatched and a calf being born."
Rodeo goers consumed 23,000 cinnamon rolls, 10,000 orders of fried bacon, 9,000 pounds of shrimp, 146,000 barbeque sandwiches and 30,000 tamales, the Chronicle reported.
