Pennies for Patients

Some people who see a penny on the ground don’t bother to pick it up. They could learn something from students at Varnett’s East campus. These pennies can add up.

During a three-week period, the students collected $1525.11 in spare change and donated the money to fight leukemia.

The Community Service Project for February hosted by the pre-kindergarten students benefited "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society."  The campaign, called  2010 Pennies for Patients, was in honor of a local student survivor and current patients. The money collected through the society's School & Youth Programs will fund life-saving research and patient service. In addition, East campus students:

  • Learn that they can make a difference in the lives of others.
  • Learn the value of giving back to the community.
  • Feel successful with small donations of spare change.
  • Experience the opportunity to succeed through teamwork.

The campus incorporated learning activities, a kick-off assembly and classroom competitions to motivate and energize the school community.

The winner of this year’s pizza party goes to Ms. Bandoquillo’s kindergarten classroom who led the way with $239.77 raised. Congratulations and thanks to all teachers, students and parents for helping to make this project such a huge success.
