Science fair promotes creative minds, friendly competition

This year at The Varnett School East, we created a science fair and the students were more than willing to answer the call to challenge their minds and creativity.

Students in grades 2-6 competed in their grade level. East Campus Science Fair Coordinator,  Ms. Krystal Williams, worked with all the science teachers: Ms. Neketa Watts, Ms. Gwendolyn Frields and Mr. Gaspar Maldonado to get the students excited and engaged for this venture.

On Monday, Dec, 9,  we invited members of the Varnett staff to be judges. They ranked the students' project based on six categories.

On a scale of 1-10, the judging sheet contained the following criteria:

  • The student scientists answered their questions in the project.
  • I wanted to know more about the experiment.
  • This is a project I would like to do.
  • Student knowledge of project and ability to explain
The students were asked to state and display the research question, state the purpose, describe the background research, write a bibliography, make a hypothesis, list the materials, describe the procedure, perform the experiment, record the results, make a conclusion and write an abstract (recommended for grades 5-6).
