Parents flock to open house and family night event

About 150 parents played games with their children, conversed with teachers, reviewed the parent handbook and enjoyed refreshments during an open house at East Campus Tuesday night.

The two-hour affair was full of energy as parents chatted with East Campus staff during the second week of the 2011-12 school year.

East Campus kindergarten-through fifth-grade director Gayle Voltz highlighted the policies and procedures in the parent/student handbook, copies of which parents took home for their review and guide.

Students led parents to their classrooms where they listened to teachers talk about their credentials, expectations for the year, upcoming fundraisers and other projects. Some students who graduated from Varnett last school year also were in attendance.

During her presentation, Ms. Voltz emphasized that bullying will be a major focus of attention this year and will not be tolerated. The handbook also has information about Varnett's homework policy, field trips and parent and community involvement.

Parents were treated to some free books as well as food and drink. Spanish-speaking staffers were on hand to assist non-English speaking parents.

In all, parents and students alike had a festive and educational evening at East Campus.
