Don't to drugs, Jacinto City police tell students

Two members of the Jacinto City Police Department came to East Campus with a simple message: Don't do drugs.

Their appearance came during Drug Awareness Week, and Detective Sgt. D. Walker and canine officer Josue Hernandez made it clear to the students what would happen if they are caught with illegal substances.

The consequences include jail time and ruining any hopes of wanting to become a police officer or members of many other desirable profession.

To press their point, Detective Walker led the chant: "I'm drug free and I will stay drug free." He also urged the students to report those who are using or selling drugs.

The officers came armed with a display on drug identification and Detective Walker stressed that students should stay clear of unauthorized prescription drugs as well as illegal controlled substances. He said these drug can make you sick or worse.

The drug identification list included alcohol, cocaine and crack, anti-depressants, inhalants, marijuana and designer drugs. After the presentation, some students gathered around the display to take a closer look.

Officer Hernandez brought with him a drug-sniffing dog named Kyra and said these animals' sense of smell is 1,000 times that of humans. Police dogs are valuable tools for police in sniffing out drugs, Officer Hernandez said.

The program concluded with 5th graders taking turns sitting in a Jacinto City patrol car.
