East Campus fifth-graders celebrated at promotion ceremony

Thirty-five East Campus students received diplomas during their fifth-grade promotion ceremony Thursday, May 25, as a packed house in the multi-purpose room looked on.

Jai'lan Samuel was the valedictorian and  Jose Villa was the salutatorian in a ceremony marked by a fifth-grade slide show, a presentation of awards and student performances.

"Today is one of those great occasions when we get to celebrate our young people - their achievements, their perseverance and their successes as they grow up," Jai'lan said in prepared remarks."It's one of the times you can take a break and reflect, feeling good as a parent or a mentor, knowing that the kids you care about are doing just fine and they're on the right path."

Jose also addressed the audience.

"I would...like to thank my parents for all of their support and encouragement in all my endeavors," he said. "I would also like to thank the entire staff  for their help during my years since prek-4 at East campus....I believe the class of 2017 is ready for another new day."

That new day could include Varnett. Ms. Gayle Voltz, the campus director, reminded those in attendance that Varnett will have sixth grade at all three campuses, including East, when school reopens August 21 for the 2017-18 school year.

Ms. Voltz said the faculty and staff would like to thank parents, guardians and students for their support throughout the year.

"Have a safe and wonderful summer," she said.
