East Campus students express anti-drug message by what they wear

East Campus students are commemorating the Red Ribbon Week anti-drug campaign by the way they dress each day.

Monday, for example, was "Red Shirt Day" in which students sported red shirts with jeans. On Tuesday, for "Sock it to Drugs Day," students came to school wearing crazy or mismatched socks with school uniforms.

Today, many students arrived on campus wearing shades with their uniforms as part of "Shade Out Drugs Day." Tomorrow, on Thursday, the children are asked to wear their shirts backward with school uniforms for "Turn Your Back on Drugs Day." And on Friday, "Character Day," students will wear their favorite costumes but nothing scary. A student parade will follow.

Red Ribbon Week became a national event in 1988 to honor Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special agent who was tortured and killed by Mexican drug traffickers in 1985.

On previous occasions, Houston police officers have visited The Varnett Public School to urge students to stay away from drugs and explain the consequences if they get caught messing with drugs. (Click here for statistics and facts.)

A flyer distributed to East Campus students and staff this week states "Go for Red Ribbon Week because it matters!" Thanks to everybody for their participation and remember the message: Stay away from drugs!
